Step-by-Step Installation Process
- Turn off power: De-energize the circuit at the breaker panel. Verify with a voltage tester.
- Prepare the box: Ensure the electrical box is properly secured and sized per NEC 314.16.
- Strip wires: Remove approximately 3/4 inch of insulation from each wire end.
- Connect ground first: Attach the bare copper or green ground wire to the green terminal screw.
- Connect neutral: Attach the white wire to the silver terminal screw.
- Connect hot: Attach the black wire to the brass terminal screw.
- Secure the receptacle: Carefully fold wires and secure the receptacle to the box with mounting screws.
- Install cover plate: Attach the cover plate and restore power to test.
Tamper-Resistant (TR) Receptacles
NEC Article 406.12: Tamper-Resistant Receptacles in Dwelling Units
All 15A and 20A, 125V and 250V nonlocking-type receptacles in dwelling units must be listed tamper-resistant. This includes receptacles in:
- Guest rooms and guest suites
- Child care facilities
- Preschools and elementary education facilities

All outdoor receptacles in Kentucky require both GFCI and weather-resistant ratings.
β‘ Critical Safety Guidelines
- ALWAYS de-energize the circuit before working
- Use a non-contact voltage tester to confirm power is off
- Never work on energized circuits
- Follow lockout/tagout procedures in commercial settings
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Ensure proper grounding connections - never skip the ground
- Do not exceed circuit ratings
- Use proper wire nuts and connectors rated for the application
- Secure all connections - loose connections cause fires
- Have work inspected by local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ)
Installation Checklist
- Circuit breaker properly sized for receptacle rating
- Wire gauge matches circuit amperage (14 AWG for 15A, 12 AWG for 20A)
- GFCI protection where required
- AFCI protection where required
- Tamper-resistant receptacles in dwelling units
- Weather-resistant for outdoor installations
- Proper box fill calculations per NEC 314.16
- Receptacle properly grounded
- Neutral and hot wires on correct terminals
- Receptacle secured to box properly
- Cover plate installed
- Test with receptacle tester after installation
- Labels applied as required (GFCI, AFCI, circuit identification)
