Step-by-Step Installation Process

  1. Turn off power: De-energize the circuit at the breaker panel. Verify with a voltage tester.
  2. Prepare the box: Ensure the electrical box is properly secured and sized per NEC 314.16.
  3. Strip wires: Remove approximately 3/4 inch of insulation from each wire end.
  4. Connect ground first: Attach the bare copper or green ground wire to the green terminal screw.
  5. Connect neutral: Attach the white wire to the silver terminal screw.
  6. Connect hot: Attach the black wire to the brass terminal screw.
  7. Secure the receptacle: Carefully fold wires and secure the receptacle to the box with mounting screws.
  8. Install cover plate: Attach the cover plate and restore power to test.

Tamper-Resistant (TR) Receptacles

NEC Article 406.12: Tamper-Resistant Receptacles in Dwelling Units

All 15A and 20A, 125V and 250V nonlocking-type receptacles in dwelling units must be listed tamper-resistant. This includes receptacles in:

Circuit Ratings and Wire Sizing

Circuit Rating Wire Size (Copper) Breaker Size Max Receptacles
15 Amp 14 AWG 15 Amp 10 receptacles (general)
20 Amp 12 AWG 20 Amp 13 receptacles (general)
NEC Article 210.23: Permissible Loads - Branch circuits shall not supply loads exceeding the branch-circuit rating.

Weather-Resistant Receptacles

NEC Article 406.9: Receptacles in Damp or Wet Locations

15A and 20A, 125V and 250V receptacles installed in wet or damp locations must be:

All outdoor receptacles in Kentucky require both GFCI and weather-resistant ratings.
